IELTS Overall Band Score Calculator

 calculate IELTS band score

The International English Language Testing System, or IELTS is an exam designed by Cambridge University to test the English language proficiency of the students seeking to study abroad. It is jointly conducted by the British Council and IDP Education Australia.
In the IELTS exam, candidates are rated on a band scale of 0-9. The exam contains four modules- Listening, Reading, Writing and speaking and is of two types- Academic and General.
Apart from separate bands for each module, the performance of a candidate is evaluated with an overall band score. Now, this becomes tricky. Calculating overall bands may be really challenging sometimes for students and IELTS tutors. So, if you too find it tough to calculate IELTS band score, here are some tips for the same.
  • If the average of the four modules ends in 0.25, then the overall score will be rounded up to the next half band. That means, if an IELTS aspirant gets 6.25 bands, it will be counted as 6.5.
  • Similarly, if it ends in 6.75, the overall band score will be rounded up to the next whole band score, i.e. 7 bands.
  • Students’ listening and reading bands are calculated by the number of correct answers out of forty.
  • Students’ speaking skills are marked against a number of criteria including Pronunciation, coherence and fluency, grammatical range and most importantly, the accuracy.
  • The most crucial point about the IELTS exam is that there is no negative marking in this exam, which means that if a student writes a wrong answer in the listening and reading test, extra marks will not be deducted.
